ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
In Chromatic Structures, Rubén Sánchez presents a precise counterpoint to gestural abstraction: color as system and measure. Rooted in muralism and graffiti yet refined with near-architectural rigor, his works organize flat color fields and clean lines into interlocking structures where every shape, tone, and void carries calibrated tension.

Within the framework of Chromatic Structures, Rubén Sánchez’s work unfolds as a rigorous inquiry into color understood as structure, measure, and a principle of balance. His language is built from a precise internal logic in which every chromatic decision, every form, and every void operate as active elements within an autonomous visual system. In this sense, color is not a mere formal attribute but a conceptual device that organizes the composition and defines the viewer’s experience.
The series The Weight of Now—articulated across five paintings and five sculptures conceived as a single discursive body—clearly encapsulates this evolution toward a practice where composition assumes an almost epistemological value. Each work is configured as a field of calculated tensions, a territory where visual forces balance and counterbalance one another to sustain a stability that is always at the limit. The title points both to the density of the present time—its charged immediacy, its persistence—and to the physical notion of weight, understood as the force that conditions and upholds every structure.
Sánchez works from what might be described as an “affective geometry”: a language in which formal purity coexists with a sensorial dimension emerging from the memory of muralism, the scale of public space, and the chromatic intensity of urban culture. In his paintings, color fields are organized by containment lines, intersections that function as joints, and areas of silence that modulate the painting’s internal breath. Color acquires spatial thickness; the line becomes boundary and support; balance becomes the fundamental tool of pictorial thought.
The sculptures deepen this same logic, translating into three dimensions the system of tensions that governs the canvases. Chromatic planes fold, intersect, and generate volumes that make visible the physical load inherent in each relationship of forms. In this way, the three-dimensional pieces operate as material extensions of the painting, revealing that the forces which on the plane are compositional intuition, in space acquire real weight and resistance.
In the artist’s words: “I’m interested in that capacity to remain steady despite the many factors that may try to destabilize us. I like to think that the basis of such stability is achieved through external support, through love, through the qualities that make us good human beings.”
In The Weight of Now, painting and sculpture converge to articulate a territory of formal maturity where the rational coexists with a vital energy inherited from urban experience. The works seem held in suspension, sustained by precise tensions that repel and attract, generating a fragile yet exact equilibrium. In doing so, Rubén Sánchez reconciles structure and sensitivity, constructing a language in which form is thought and color a tool of understanding.
Ultimately, his work proposes a reflection on the act of fixing the instant: how to grant stability to a present that, by definition, is in constant flight. Sánchez’s practice stands as an exercise in resistance to contemporary speed, an advocacy of slow time and of color as an active intelligence in the process of inhabiting the now.
