ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Alejandra de la Torre works with everyday objects as material forms of memory. In her practice, what might seem ordinary or insignificant becomes charged with traces of time, affection, and lived experience.
By bringing these objects into the artistic field, she transforms how we look at what usually goes unnoticed. In the context of 10 Years. 10 Artists. 10 Stories, her work suggests that matter does not simply occupy space: it preserves what we have lived, kept, and struggled to let go.

ABOUT THE ARTIST
ALEJANDRA DE LA TORRE
Alejandra de la Torre explores our emotional attachment to objects—why we accumulate possessions and where the line lies between normality and obsession. Using objects as a point of departure, she reflects on everyday acts of accumulation, from memory preservation to collecting. Her work combines painting with drawing, screen printing, transfers, and the inclusion of physical objects.
CURATORS' COMMENTARY
The Memory of Matter
by Pablo García
Madrid, 2026
Alejandra de la Torre and Gemma Alpuente begin from seemingly distant points, yet both work from the same intuition: matter can retain information. An object, a surface, or a form is not only what we see, but also the result of what has happened to it.
In Alejandra de la Torre’s work, this memory emerges through everyday objects. Elements that have seemingly lost their importance retain something far more difficult to erase: the memories, bonds, and affections invested in them. Accumulating, preserving, or letting go thus cease to be trivial actions. Each object functions as a material form of memory. By bringing it into the realm of art, Alejandra de la Torre transforms the way we look at what would normally go unnoticed, turning the everyday into a means of reflecting on time, relationships, and our resistance to allowing certain things to disappear.
With Gemma Alpuente, it is painting itself that undergoes transformation. Colour leaves the flat surface, acquires volume, and physically occupies space, entering an intermediate territory between painting and sculpture. Her forms emerge through processes of controlled expansion in which chemical reaction, technical knowledge, and intuition determine the outcome. There is a precise moment when Gemma Alpuente decides to stop this process and fix the material in place. The work then preserves the trace of a transformation: what we contemplate is also the record of something that was happening and has been brought to a halt.
Both artists thus turn matter into a form of memory. In Alejandra de la Torre’s work, it preserves what we have experienced and invested in objects. In Gemma Alpuente’s, it records the process of transformation that gave rise to the work itself. In both cases, what we see always contains the trace of something that came before.
In 10 Years. 10 Artists. 10 Stories., Alejandra de la Torre and Gemma Alpuente offer two different paths towards the same conclusion: the surface is never the end of an image. Sometimes, it is simply the place from which to begin looking.
